Postgraduate Studies at the University of Khartoum started in 1954 with the "Clinical Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology " offered by the Faculty of Medicine. The first student for M.Sc by research was registered in the Faculty of Agriculture in 1958. In 1967 the "Postgraduate Studies Committee" was created;its responsibilities included planning,supervision and coordination of Postgraduate Studies. The Senate of the University of Khartoum recommended the establishment of the Graduate College in 1972 (Senate minute 5576). Statute (35) creating the college was passed by the University Council in 1973. This allowed for wider representation of University Colleges and Institutes, promotion and coordination of interdisciplinary research and cooperation with similar institutes and research centres in Sudan and abroad.

Providing a variety of high quality postgraduate programmes and research in all specializations and disciplines, with high quality, in accordance with international standards and with values derived from Sudanese value. And embracing modern concepts and nurturing research environment, with the aim of raising competence of postgraduate students to high standards that would enable them to undertake the responsibility of work and interaction with the society at both national and international levels, aiming at fulfilling the needs and requirements for development.
