Introduction to Programmes

Welcome to the Graduate College – University of Khartoum, and thank you for visiting our website. Our University occupies the first rank among universities in Sudan, and is a leading university in the African continent and the Arab Region in offering graduate programs. The University began to offer postgraduate higher diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics in 1954. The first registration for masters by research was in the year 1958 in the Faculty of Agriculture. The Senate of the University of Khartoum passed the proposal to establish a graduate school in the year 1972. In the year 1973, the Graduate College was established.

The graduate programs at the University of Khartoum aim to develop the learners’ capabilities and skills to research and train them to work individually or in teams. Our learners have access to conventional libraries, electronic libraries and research laboratories spread over 23 faculties and 12 institutes and research centres. The university has highly qualified academic staff members that include 194 Professors 388 Associate Professors and 540 Assistant Professors.

Postgraduate degrees offered by the University of Khartoum include:

• Postgraduate diploma- 2 Semesters( one academic year)
• Diploma/master (by course work or by course work and research) 2 - 4 Semesters ( one to two academic years)
• Master of Arts (by research, by coursework or by coursework and research) 2 - 4 Semesters (one to two academic years).
• Master of Science (by research, by coursework or by coursework and research) 2 - 4 Semesters (one to two academic years).
• Master of Education (by research, by coursework or by coursework and research) 2 - 4 Semesters (one to two academic years).
• Master of Pharmacy (by research, by coursework or by coursework and research) 2 - 4 Semesters (one to two academic years).
• Master of Veterinary Science (by research or by coursework and research) 2 - 4 Semesters (one to two academic years).
• PhD (by research) 6 - 10 Semesters.( three to five academic years)
• Clinical Doctorate 6 - 10 semesters. .( three to five academic years)
• Medical Doctorate (by research) 6 -10 semesters. .( three to five academic years)

Mode of Study:

1.Research

In this mode of study, the students choose a research topic from a specific area of research under the supervision of an academic staff member specialized in the area. The supervisor guides the student on how to achieve the research objectives, and they periodically report on the progress of the study. The university assigns an assistant supervisor in the case where the subject matter extends between different disciplines. In the cases of students registered to study outside Sudan, an external supervisor will be appointed to assist the internal supervisor to oversee the part that takes place outside Sudan.

2.Coursework

This includes compulsory and elective courses in addition to a graduation project or research paper. The study is in the form of lectures and seminars. Evaluation of the students is based on the semesters’ work, assignments and exams as defined in the regulations and requirements for each program.
